A Mental Construct for Wayfinding

I was biking and unsatisfied with my directional senses. I resolved to build a better system for myself. By the end of my ride, after many tangents, I managed to get one.

Instead of pointing directions for things, you make a connected graph of ways and places. You shrink down the ways and give them values (weights) for how long they take to get from place to place. Turns out this is very generally useful, and my direction (algorithm) manager snapped it up and was very pleased with it.

The fun part starts when you connect things in different maps to each other, and applying constructs to constructs to build things. As ever, abstractions must end in concretion to be useful.

I had a thought occur to me the other day. The last Stirling Singles retired in 1916... I think it's easy enough to say Emily could've arrived on the island during WW1. The fun part is who she has to work with though. The Island Of Sodor book says the NWR borrowed primarily from two mainland railways.

I've been procrastinating my school work because the thought of even working on it makes me nauseous. So enjoy a part of a Kaz and Wylan fic I am writing! The wesper fic club got a sneak peek of this last night 👀

Wylan looked up to Kaz with his wide terrified eyes that never seemed to leave him. "He wanted to help me."

"When he realized nothing was helping you. Did he try to learn a method that you could understand? Talk with the tutors to see if you needed accommodations?"

"No but—"

"When you were upset at yourself, did he comfort you?"

"At first he did but that doesn't—"

"Then he didn't care for you Wylan." Kaz said bluntly. "He tortured you. And if you don't think he did, he allowed others to. Hypotism, drugging, beatings and who knows what else. At some point your father stopped trying to find methods to help and wanted to punish you. Clealry you see that."

If he said it it would be true. Wylan didnt— he couldn't let it be true. Some part of him wanted to live in the diluted fanstsy that his father loved him."Well I deserved it anyways." The words slipped out before Wylan understood the gravity of them.

Silence ran over the two, and when Wylan dared to look up at Kaz, he seemed unphased. However to those who had a watchful eye, they would notice the darker glint, the tighness of gloves curling around the canes head.

"Why does it matter that you can't read?" Kaz asked in a hushed tone seeped with vemon. "I want you to ask yourself that. Not what it means to your father. Nor the council. What does it mean to you?"

Wylan opened his mouth to speak as the question raced his mind. Out of everything he expected Kaz to say. It wasn't that. What did it mean to him? For starters it meant that he couldnt become heir. No. No that was his father wanted....

"No one will take me seriously."

"You can figure out a chemical compound based on the weight and color alone. I've seen Dregs members come to you for advice. I'd be shocked if anyone didn't take you seriously. What else?"

Wylan swollowed weakly. Him not being able to read or write meant that he was stupid. That he was a moron. An imbecile. That he could never take over the business. That he was useless. But those were all words engraved into him by his father. It meant...It meant....What did it mean to him?

"I don't know." He finally muttered out.

"Exactly. You are brilliant. But this shame you hold clouds your jugment and character. You warp your own self image soly around your father."

Wylan assumed if he wasn't going to be the one to say it, then of course the Saints would have Kaz Brekker. Who better to admit a truth someone was refusing to accept?

I’m picking up way more Norwegian than i expected watching Skam. I fully expected that I’d watch the entire series once through understanding practically nothing of the audio and then in subsequent rewatches after having really picked up my studies (I’m at zero studies rn) start picking up words and phrases.

I’ve already got the days of the week, quite a few personal pronouns, several variations of hello and goodbye, some numbers, variations of yes and no, please and thank you, sorry, and a few short phrases (it’s all right, are you ok. Are you sure- that kind of thing) that I can understand while having looked away from the screen and missed the subtitle, and I’m only in episode 7.

Overwatch 2: Invasion: Lore Compilation - Bastion

I love that Bastion is getting to join Overwatch! I wasn't totally sure they'd go that route with him.

We also got confirmation after many years of fandom curiosity that Bastion goes by, or at least answers to, he/him pronouns! In the Gothenburg opening cutscene, Torb even corrects Reinhardt about it.

I like that they're showing Zarya as still having a lot of hesitation about omnics (I like that better than her just flipping her entire worldview overnight), but ultimately allowing Bastion to sit with her. Cute lil interaction c:

I also think it's interesting that Bastion must be sentient (I think? Since he was around during The Awakening, even if he was out of commission at that point?), but his way of thinking, acting, and interpreting the world is completely different from a human's. There's definitely a VERY blurry line in the Overwatch universe between the mechanical beings that are considered sentient (Bastion, Zenyatta, Ramattra, etc.) and the ones that are intelligent and have personalities, but are apparently not given the "sentient" designation (Echo, Orisa). I wonder if someday we'll get some exploration as to whether or not modern omnics/mechanical beings can ever reach the point again of becoming or being considered sentient.
